It is on page 140 in Newcomb’s Wildflowers.

Common name: purple-leaved willow-herb Scientific name: Epilobium coloratum.

Adroecium: number of stamens 8 separate, fused or arranged in any special way? 

8, separate, and attached alternately between the petals and in front of them, in a whorl around the stigma.

How can you tell? (Cite features that indicate the number of carpels.)

syncarpous, consisting of 4 carpels (as evidenced by the slightly 4-angled stigma and the 4-angled ovary. Also, a cross-section of the ovary shows 4 chambers. 

Flower type/ovary position: Hypogynous, or  perigynous or epigynous? epigynous

Flower symmetry: actinomorphic (regular) or zygomorphic (irregular)? actinomorphic (regular)

Additional distinctive features: the flowers have an especially long and narrow ovary that is inferior, resembling a pedicel.

This flower was found here (location and habitat/environment): Weedy trail edge at OSU-Marion Campus Prairie, reclining on raspberry shrubs. 

It is on page 324 in( Petrides Trees & Shrubs  (as Convolvulus sepium)

Common name hedge bindweed Scientific name: Calystegia sepium

Corolla:  number of petals 5 separate or  fusedfused, into a bell shape (campanulate) with 5 barely perceptible lobes; fused into a tubethat extends from the bases of the flower 

Calyx:   number of sepals 5, separate, small and inconspicuous, obscured by 2 large sepal-like bracts.

Adroecium: number of stamens 5, attached to corolla-tube.

Gynoecium type: unicarpellate, or syncarpous: syncarpous, consisting of 3 carpels, as evidenced by the 3-lobed stigma. 

Flower type/ovary position: hypogynpus, with a superior ovary. 

Flower symmetry: actinomorphic (radial).

Additional distinctive features: the stamens are attached to the corolla tube.

Common name Queen Anne’s lace  Scientific name: Daucus carota

Corolla:  number of petals  separate or  fusedseparate

Calyx:    number of sepals 5 separate or fused? they seem separate, but are so small it is difficult to judge

Adroecium: number of stamens: 5, separate, alternating with the petals

Gynoecium type:syncarpous, with 2 carpels (evident by deep ridge in center of ovary, and 2-branched stigma

Flower type/ovary position:epigynous with an inferior ovary

Flower symmetry: actinomorphic (regular) 

Additional distinctive features: The style base is expanded into a knob-like structure at the top of the flower.

This flower was found here (location and habitat/environment): open sparsely wooded hillside in Delaware near Alum Creek reservoir

It is on page 254 in Newcomb’s (as Gerardia tenuifolia)

Calyx:    number of sepals 5 separate or fused? fused

Adroecium: number of stamens 4 (according to a technical manual, but I can only see 2 in the photo)

Gynoecium type syncarpous, of 2 carpels

Flower type/ovary position: hypogynous with a superior ovary

Flower symmetry: zygomorphic (bilateral)

Additional distinctive features: The stamens are inserted on the corolla tube, but this is not a hypanthium, because it doesn’t include the sepals.
